Stewardship Reflection

Sunday 30th August is Social Justice Sunday, an initiative of the Australian Catholic Bishop’s Conference(ACBC) Office for Social Justice.  Each year the ACBC chose a contemporary social issue and develop a statement outlining the situation and relevant Catholic Social Teaching and produce an annual social justice statement. This year the ACBC are focusing on mental health. The social justice statement is called - To Live Life to the Full- Mental Health in Australia Today.

The statement addresses mental health in the Australian community with particular regard to issues for young people, older people and families in the context of drought, bushfires and the pandemic.  It challenges the treatment of those experiencing mental illness and the importance of a commitment to the common good in our support of First Nations people and communities; and refugees and asylum seekers.
A copy of the statement and additional supporting resources are available here. Please take the time to read the statement.

Laudato Si’ Community

Tenison Woods Catholic School is working with the City of West Torrens council to encourage our school community to recycle food scraps into compost rather than sending this valuable organic material to landfill, where it is simply a waste. The council provides a free kitchen caddy and a roll of compostable liner bags to West Torrens residents.  Additional bags are available free of charge from the Council's Civic Centre and the Hamra Centre Library. If you are interested in recycling food scraps using a free kitchen caddy and roll of bags, please check the City of West Torrens website  and place your order by 18th September.  Let them know that you are part of the TWCS community.  A caddy, roll of bags and information on how to use the caddy will be sent home with your eldest child when all expressions of interest have been processed.

National Walk Safely to School Day

On Friday 11th September, children are being encouraged to start incorporating regular walking back into their daily routine, whether back at school or learning remotely from home.
Professor Patrick McGorry AO tells us that, “The recent pandemic dramatically interrupted the routines of families with young children as schools closed for extended periods of time," he said. "The mental and physical health impacts of COVID-19 are intertwined and we need to act quickly to flatten the rising curve of young Australian’s now struggling with mental health.” National Walk Safely to School Day is a community initiative that aims to raise awareness of the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits that regular walking (especially to and from school) can provide for the long term wellbeing of our children.  Start putting your best foot forward.

Deep Blue Treasure Hunt

The Marine Discovery Centre (MDC) and The Science Collective have worked together to develop a family-friendly, marine-based web app called ‘The Deep Blue Treasure Hunt’.
The app uses mobile technology and hands-on fun activities to help families learn about their local coastlines and teaches them how to look after and protect marine environments. It provides a fun and interactive way for children to learn about their marine environment and contribute positively to its future health.
A number of prizes have been donated to support would-be marine biologists on their quest for the treasure chest. South Australian-based families who complete all of the activities within a month will also go into the draw to win prizes including a short stay at Big 4 West Beach Parks.
While the competition and marine trail will be open for one month, the app will be live for three years, which means there is plenty of time for marine-based learning. The app can be downloaded here.
