New Learning Spaces News

24.09.20

The R/1 & 3/4 Neighbourhoods have moved into their new learning spaces.

R/1 Neighbourhood

Each morning in the Reception and Year 1 classrooms, students are immersed in various learning experiences through play-based learning. As educators, we believe every child in the early years is a capable, competent learner and therefore opportunities are provided for child-initiated play which enable students to explore, experiment, discover and solve problems in a variety of ways.

We the educators, help to facilitate this learning by listening carefully to their suggestions and their play and provide them with the necessary language and skills as they are needed. Therefore we have introduced different nooks into our neighbourhood. In entering our space, you will find a hairdressing salon, a workshop and a café.  Initially these nooks contained only a few items. The students as leaders of their own learning, have added their own ideas to these nooks. For example; in the construction nook, students realised that they needed to create plans and designs and that in the café nook, they needed a menu and a reservations book. This learning sees students become active collaborators as they communicate and problem solve in small groups with their peers. Students have developed an understanding of the different roles in each of these nooks and have developed context-specific vocabulary, strengthened their Literacy and Numeracy skills and more! These nooks also address the Australian Curriculum’s personal and social capability whereby students’ personal/emotional and social/relational dispositions, intelligences, sensibilities and learning are addressed.

What is some feedback that you have about the new building?
Anna: I like how the teachers get microphones because then they don’t have to lose their voice like the olden days.
Lulu: I like that we can have lockers so that I can have a space for my stuff instead of putting it on a bookshelf.
Matilda: I like that it's very spacious and there are lots of areas to do presentations and practice.
Mikaela: Even though it's smaller, it actually works better for us because then everyone has areas that they can work in. We have spread out so that it’s bigger. For example, in the corridors, outside on the logs, in the teepee/igloo, the think tank and our own backyard.
Gaby: I like how there are sitting areas outside the classroom.
Evie: I like that there is a couch where the window is in that seating area. I like how we can sit outside and in the corridor areas.
Connor W: The lockers are better than the bookshelves because your stuff won’t fall on the floor.
Rubi: I like the think tank because we practice for Choral Reading.

Fast Thumb Feedback:
Do you enjoy learning in the new building?
