Message from the Principal

01.08.19

Dear TWCS Families,

I hope you had a relaxing term break and enjoyed a change from the school routine. The students seem to have returned refreshed and recharged and have settled quickly into the new term.

My sincere thanks go to all our families who assisted with the letter box drop of pamphlets during the holiday break promoting our activities for Catholic Schools Open Week. At TWCS we will be holding a Twilight Principal Tour from 4.30-5.30pm on Monday 12th August for families considering TWCS as a place for their child. This tour is in addition to the Principal Tour that will occur the following week on Wednesday 21st August from 9.30-11.00am. On Tuesday 13th August we are holding our first Early Years Learning Morning for 3 and 4 year old children and their parents which is another great opportunity to welcome those families considering enrolling their child at TWCS to experience the supportive, inclusive, contemporary learning environment we have to offer.

I also wish to thank our P&F Committee for organising and providing the opportunity last weekend for TWCS families to gather at a 'Family Day Out' movie event at the Capri Theatre.

I warmly welcome all the new families who have joined the TWCS community. This term Ava, Max, Luca B, Thomas, Grace, Alyssia, Yasmin, Owen, Summer, Luca G, Isabella and Christina officially started their school journey with us and it has been great to see them navigating their way through new structures and settling into new routines. I  will officially welcome the students  to our school community at our St Mary of the Cross Feast Day Mass on Thursday 8th August at 9.00am. We look forward to seeing them learn, grow and flourish during their time at TWCS.

We have an exciting term ahead with lots of wonderful events to celebrate. Already 2/3T and 5/6P classes have visited the West Torrens Library to experience the Mobile Starlab where they learnt about different star constellations and listened to various stories of the stars from Indigenous cultures in Australia and around the world. Later this term, our Year 6 students travel to Canberra  and our Year 5/6 choir will perform at the Adelaide Festival Theatre as part of the Catholic Schools Music Festival.

School Performance - SAVE THE DATE

All of the classes are preparing for our School Performance which promises to be a night of entertainment for all ages. This year the performance is being held on Thursday 12th September at The Christian Family Centre, 185 Frederick Rd, Seaton.  There will be no matinee performance this year, however the students will attend the Centre during the day for a rehearsal with the performance starting in the evening at 7.00pm.  Information regarding ticket sales and costume requirements will be sent to families soon.

STEM Learning Initiative

As part of Catholic Education SA (CESA) STEM Learning Initiative, the CESA Learning and Technologies team and the University of South Australia (UniSA) are providing the opportunity for our Year 4 and 5 students to participate in the Virtual Reality in Learning Design program during August.

Delivered by Dr Paul Unsworth (UniSA School of Education) with industry support by technology company Augment Space, this program offers the opportunity to:
  • Explore, learn and interact with VR Technology
  • Contextualise VR in Learning Design
  • Create a VR experience with students
The learning is being offered as a series of teacher professional learning and student workshops at the Samsung SMARTschool at UniSA Magill campus. Our Digital Technologies Coordinator, Kim Martin and Year 3/4 Class teacher Tom Atyeo will be accompanying the students through this learning experience.

School Attendance

As we begin the term I'd like to remind families about the importance of regular attendance at school and the important role regular attendance plays in contributing to positive future outcomes for your child/ren.

The following is an excerpt from The Department for Education, Attendance matters in South Australian preschools and schools (2018-2021) document regarding school attendance:
Consistent school attendance from the early years is fundamental to ensuring children gain a strong foundation for later learning.  In addition to the protective factors provided by enrolment and attendance, research indicates that students who regularly attend school achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance patterns. As early as preschool, regular absence can predict later attendance patterns. While poor attendance is a strong indicator of lower levels of achievement in learning tasks, it also highlights as the potential for problematic social skills and difficulty in forming and maintaining relationships. Longitudinal studies have shown that not completing school is a strong predictor of negative economic, physical, and mental health outcomes in adulthood and involvement with the criminal justice system. Attendance at school contributes to a community that is well educated, healthier, employed, financially independent and more empowered. Children and young people who do not regularly attend school miss out on planned learning experiences, sequences of instruction and class participation. The impact of this loss is compounded with each absence.

Arriving at school on time is also important as many of the routines and structures that take place first thing in the morning are designed to support students to be prepared for the day.
A reminder that at TWCS our school day is as follows:
