Religious Identity & Mission

Dear Families,

I would like to warmly welcome everyone back to Term 3, especially those who are new to our community. At Tenison Woods Catholic School we share a strong connection with the Brooklyn Park and Richmond Parish and parish priest Fr Peter Zwanns. As part of this connection, we offer class Masses (Reception -Year 6) on most weeks as well as a Parish Based Sacramental Program (Years 3-6).

The preparation of class Masses is allocated to particular classes, and your child may be invited to take up roles such as reading, carrying the Cross, a candle, the Children's Lectionary or the bread and wine. These Masses are for everyone, and as such we welcome all our families to join us for these celebrations of the Word and Eucharist.

"For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them." Matthew 18:20

Class Masses

Our Term 3 class Masses begin with two significant Feasts. On Thursday 8 August, we celebrate the Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and on Thursday 15 August, we gather as a community for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  All other class Masses for the remainder of the term will be held on Friday mornings. There will be no Mass on Friday 13 September as this is our school performance week.

Feast of St Mary of the Cross

Mary MacKillop is Australia's first Saint.  As the eldest of eight children, Mary supported her parents to raise her younger siblings. As a teenager Mary moved to the town of Penola where she would meet Fr Julian Tenison Woods.  Together with Fr Woods, Mary's vision would grow to become one of deep spirituality.  Through a life of prayer, no matter the obstacles, Mary continued to place her trust in God always believing that God would provide.  Mary MacKillop expressed her name in religion as Mary of the Cross.  Mary saw the cross as an expression of her commitment to God, her person relationship to Jesus Christ and all those in need.

"Never see a need, without doing something about it" Mary MacKillop 1871

Canonised in 2010, Mary MacKillop is now recognised as St Mary of the Cross, an educator, co-founder of the Sisters of St Joseph (Josephites) and as an advocate for the poor, women and all those in need.

Community Donation

To celebrate this Feast we are inviting families to respond to the annual St Vincent de Paul (Vinnies) Winter Appeal.  The appeal encourages those who are able to de-clutter and donate any quality items including outgrown clothing, pre-loved toys, books, CD's, DVD's, manchester and blankets. Donations can be placed around the base of the Vinnies Donation Box in the St Aloysius Church foyer on Thursday 8 August at the beginning of our REN Feast of St Mary of the Cross class Mass.

Parish Sacramental Program: Confirmation

This term, we are offering the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion. The first two Confirmation workshops were held on Wednesday 24 July and 31 July in the St John Bosco Parish Hall. Fr Peter shared the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit and encouraged our parish candidates that they consider a Saint and a sponsor who can help guide them as they grow to use these gifts to the full.   The details for the third workshop will be as follows.
