A strong theme this year has been to focus on Visible Well-being.

This term we have begun our 'What’s the Buzz' program which builds on our work on social skills. Two keys things we’ve been focusing on so far have been how to respond well after winning or losing in individual and team sports, and how to seek attention in positive ways. We discussed some good responses to these situations and came up with the following suggestions such as: say ‘Good game’, ‘you played well’, shake hands, ‘well done’, and don’t brag. Students have improved greatly in this area and come back from brain train soccer and basketball with much more respect for the other team. Ideas on how to seek attention in positive ways have included: being helpful, being polite, and doing good work to share with the class. Some things not to do are: sulking, pretending to be hurt, being loud and doing the wrong thing. Students have responded well to these discussions and the result is a much more happy and positive learning environment.

In English, students have been consolidating their writing skills by applying what they have learnt to their narratives, recounts, and persuasive texts. We have used Visible Learning by setting clear success criteria. The checklists in their writing Success Criteria have been to include full stops, capital letters, conjunctions, adjectives, time words, speech marks and paragraphs into their writing. Lately in maths, we have been consolidating our number skills and applying those skills to learn how to tell the time on an analogue clock.
