It has been a very busy few weeks in Reception N. With the weather becoming warmer, we have been utilising our outdoor learning space. In play-based learning the students have been leaders in their own learning as they have used the Character Strengths of Creativity and Teamwork in making their own ‘rock shop’ out on the deck, making rock paint using rocks, crayons and water and finding crystals, just to name a few. Students have also enjoyed opportunities to paint outside and follow the obstacle course. A group of students in Reception N noticed some changes with the trees outside. They became curious about this and questioned why the bark on the tree trunks were peeling. The students noticed the new bark was a purple colour. This led them to predict why the tree was going through these changes; could it be the change in weather?
On Tuesday 22nd October, we hosted our second Early Years Morning where children of 3 and 4 years of age were invited into our Reception unit to see the learning that takes place. Our Receptions are to be thanked for their use of Leadership and Kindness in helping make this morning a success.
On Wednesday 23rd October, we went on an excursion to the Road Safety Centre with Reception G. Merrilyn, the police officer led us in our learning experience. We began by watching some videos on pedestrian, bike, passenger and road safety. We then went for a walk around the track and followed the road rules to ensure we crossed each road safely. We know to always ‘Stop, Look, Listen, Think’ before crossing a road. Next, it was time to ride the bikes on the track. We learned how to correctly put on a helmet to ensure that we keep our heads safe. We had loads of fun riding on the track, remembering essential road safety skills such as; keeping left, stop and give way. We had lunch in Bonython Park and spent the afternoon playing in the nature play space.
On Friday 1st November, our class hosted Mass on All Saints. On this day, we remember all the saints within the Catholic Church. Father Peter spoke to us about the work of saints and how we too can be saints, living in the footsteps of Jesus.
On Friday 1st November, Reception N joined Reception G, R/1K and the Year 1’s in 1/2S for a school sleepover. For some students, this was their first time being away from home and each student is to be commended on their use of the Character Strengths of Bravery and Perseverance. Students arrived at 5pm ready for a fun filled evening with their mattresses, sleeping bags, pillows and bags. Large games were set up in the courtyard for the students to play; Jenga, Connect 4, Checkers, Snakes and Ladders and Lego. Students also participated in activities such as playing with an earth ball and parachute which were run by Life Be In It. This was then followed by a BBQ dinner. We then watched a movie in the Beehive and enjoyed eating popcorn and drinking Milo. Then it was time for bed. The excitement continued the following morning with students beginning to wake up from 6:15am. We moved into the Hall for breakfast and then it was time to pack up our belongings and head home. It was a great experience for all students and it is fair to say the event was a success. Thank you to staff and parent volunteers who assisted with our sleepover.
